CMI hosts Workshop on International Peace Mediation (30.7.2010)
The Crisis Management Initiative (CMI) and the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to Indonesia have co-hosted an Expert Workshop on International Peace Mediation between the EU and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Jakarta, Indonesia on the 30th of July.
The workshop focused on sharing experiences and information between the EU and the ASEAN on the practice of international peace mediation, as both are essentially “peace projects.” Additionally, the goal was to further explore the possibilities for coordinated and complimentary efforts by the EU and ASEAN in this field.
The event was officially opened by the EU Delegation Charge d’affairs Mr. Jan-Willem Blankert and the ASEAN Deputy Secretary General Mr. Bagas Hapsoro. Among the other speakers were former Indonesian Vice-President Mr. Jusuf Kalla and Indonesian Human Rights Commissioner Mr. Rafendi Djamin. The event brought together approximately 30 EU and ASEAN officials, mediation experts from member states, non-governmental organisations, and think-tanks.
The successful conclusion of the discussions led the participants to plan a follow-up on the workshop. A complete report including recommendations by the participants and proposed next steps will be published in September.
The meeting was organized under the auspices of the Initiative for Peacebuilding, in which CMI acts as a coordinator.
